Can AI Revolutionise Eating Disorder Recovery?

Emilie Faure, the founder of Juniver, is revolutionising the way women experience recovery from eating disorders (ED) through innovative technology. Juniver is an AI-powered app designed to provide 24/7 support, personalised guidance, and a safe space for women to overcome eating disorders, regardless of the stage in their recovery journey.

Eating disorders affect approximately 1 in 10 people in the UK, with women being disproportionately impacted. These disorders, which can range from restrictive eating to binge eating, have long-lasting effects on mental and physical health. However, access to care remains a significant barrier for many. Traditional treatment, often relying on expensive therapist sessions and scarce specialists, is not always accessible, leaving many women without adequate support. Additionally, GPs, who are often the first point of contact, receive minimal training on diagnosing and treating EDs, with only about two hours of education on the subject.

Faure's mission with Juniver is to fill this gap by providing accessible, continuous support through technology. The app offers personalised, real-time guidance, helping users navigate the complexities of their relationship with food. It includes tools for logging feelings and thoughts, a community platform for sharing struggles and progress, and mindfulness lessons designed to foster healthier mental and emotional habits.

What sets Juniver apart is its use of artificial intelligence. The app employs machine learning to track users' habits, such as meal skipping or cravings, and offer tailored advice. This data is used by specialists and clinicians who provide feedback and refine the guidance given, making the app a constantly evolving resource.

With over 2,000 active users, Juniver is already making an impact, but its full effectiveness is still being evaluated through ongoing clinical trials in partnership with King’s College University.

Faure's approach is particularly significant for women, as eating disorders often come with societal pressures and stigma, leaving many women feeling isolated in their struggle. Juniver creates a sense of community and support, enabling women to regain control over their health and well-being without the need for traditional, in-person treatment.

The app's success is not just about providing practical tools but also offering emotional support, which is often overlooked in the recovery process.

By addressing both the psychological and physical aspects of EDs, Juniver aims to empower women to take charge of their recovery in a way that is more accessible, flexible, and personalized than ever before. As Faure continues to develop Juniver, the goal is clear: to provide women with the tools and support they need to overcome eating disorders and lead healthier, more fulfilled lives.
